JAG understands that the COVID-19 pandemic has caused an unprecedented strain on endoscopy services and their ability to meet waiting times targets. JAG recommends that services control demand by strengthening appropriateness, for example through enhanced clinical vetting and through implementing the new surveillance guidelines which are expected to reduce surveillance procedures by up to 70%. This will help ensure that only necessary and high-quality endoscopy is undertaken.
JAG has temporarily relaxed the requirement to only outsource activity to a JAG accredited provider but continues to strongly recommend it. This is a temporary solution to support endoscopy services as they restore activity and services should ensure they are compliant with the latest guidance regarding this.
If a service has no other option than to outsource activity to an non-accredited provider, then they should refer to the 'outsourcing to a non-accredited provider' guidance. This guidance gives requirements for services to follow to ensure that quality and safety is maintained.
