JAG understands that the COVID-19 pandemic has caused an unprecedented strain on endoscopy services and their ability to meet waiting times targets. JAG recommends that services control demand by strengthening appropriateness, for example through enhanced clinical vetting and through implementing the new surveillance guidelines which are expected to reduce surveillance procedures by up to 70%. This will help ensure that only necessary and high-quality endoscopy is undertaken.
JAG temporarily relaxed the requirement to only outsource activity to a JAG accredited provider during COVID-19 but this is no longer in place. If services outsource, it must be to an accredited service.
If a service has no other option than to outsource activity to an non-accredited provider, then they should refer to the 'outsourcing to a non-accredited provider' guidance. This guidance gives requirements for services to follow to ensure that quality and safety is maintained.
