The withdrawal time of 6 minutes is a standard key performance indicator (KPI) but not meeting it will not affect your service's accreditation. The KPI audit template that services must submit as part of their assessment is designed to help services manage their own KPIs.
It's important to note, however, that withdrawing too quickly during colonoscopy procedures is likely to increase rates of missed polyps or cancers. If an endoscopist is not meeting this KPI, the service should be robustly checking post-colonoscopy colorectal cancer (PCCRC) in their colonoscopies and monitoring their adenoma detection rate to ensure they are not withdrawing too quickly.
The average withdrawal time in the NHS bowel cancer screening programme (BCSP) is now 12 minutes. The desired time for lower GI procedures is 10 minutes.
