For gastroscopy, 'physically assisted' means that the trainer took over the scope at any point during the diagnostic procedure. They can take the scope for any therapy performed.
For colonoscopy, 'physically assisted' refers to the trainer physically taking the scope at any point from insertion to reaching the caecum. The trainer can take over the scope to intubate the terminal ileum, withdraw the scope or perform therapy on withdrawal. The exception to this is cases where the trainee is expected to intubate the terminal ileum.
In relation to the colonoscopy KPI ‘Unassisted terminal ileal intubation rate (IBD/suspected IBD)’, the trainee is expected to intubate the terminal ileum without physical assistance in cases with the following indications:
These indications count toward this KPI:
- Anaemia
- Diarrhoea - acute
- Diarrhoea – chronic
- Diarrhoea - chronic with blood
- IBD assessment / surveillance
The following are only visible to candidates at NEDi2 sites

- Looser or more frequent stool – acute (<6w)
- Looser or more frequent stool – chronic (>6w)
